I appreciate my Dad every day, but each Father's Day I take a moment to reflect on the past year with my awesome Dad. During that period of reflection, I consider possible Father’s Day gifts to get him.
A Father’s Day Story
As I was pondering Father’s Day gifts this year, I decided that now that I live in D.C., professional photographs of the two of us would make a wonderful present. As we looked through the final shots, I began to think about my childhood. Raising a daughter as a single dad could not have been easy, but my Dad did everything he possibly could to make sure each day was as exciting and memorable as the last.
Throughout my childhood, my Dad was always there to support me. He coached my soccer teams, took me to work with him and was at every school play. While my friends may have been embarrassed of their dads, I was busy developing cues with mine so we could communicate while I was on the soccer field.
For a while, he tried to push my buttons, but it rarely worked. He used to drop me off at high school and honk as I walked inside. We all had a good laugh when my response was to proudly yell, "Bye Dad, love you!" with a big wave right back at him.
Even now that I am older and in law school, we still have that close bond. He always takes time out of his day to answer my phone calls (on bad days there are usually several), and he has traveled all the way to D.C. just to visit for a day. As I sit here anticipating the commencement of my summer internship, I realize how lucky I am. Lucky to have this last summer at home with my family, but mostly because I have such a caring, encouraging and supportive father.
